Ever feel like you have so many project ideas and issues you want to solve that you just end up not starting any?? 💔 - One person cannot feel the burden of resolving all our environmental issues 🍃. It’s exhausting to consider all the struggles we face and feel the responsibility to tackle them all. I feel it all the time. The desire to fix it all and ensure a healthy future for our planet has been a real source of my own unhappiness and anxiety 🌧. - Now I’m focusing on what I CAN do. I know I can have a positive impact in people’s lives and on this planet. And I know where my skills lie and what my passions are. So that’s where I intend to start. There’s power in that ✊🏼. I feel powerful now. Trying to shoulder it all, while knowing that I can’t solve it single handedly leaves me powerless. So…how ARE wolves 🐺 linked to trees 🌲 ?? - We know salmon 🐟 feed trees but there are so many other interactions at play…like with wolves. - The most famous story of a trophic cascade (interactions within ecosystems) is the re-introduction of wolves into the Yellowstone National Park ⛰. - The very trees that line the rivers where salmon spawn are food for elk. When wolves were wiped out in 1930, elk numbers increased..A LOT, meaning the forests saw a huge decline in these trees. In turn, nesting places for birds 🦅 and food for beavers was lost. - ALSO, as the trees no longer provided stability, soil erosion became a real problem, speeding up river flow 💧 and essentially clogging up the water ways and smothering fish spawning grounds. - Once the wolves returned in 95 these effects were reversed: tree cover increased, beaver dams slowed the rivers, and even bears benefited as they feed on berries 🍇 from the trees.
