A Charcoal Toothbrush and Almond Milk Kinda Morning

The Plastic Toothbrush

I have already mentioned the devastating environmental footprint left single-use plastic straws and plastic bottles. But, what I haven’t yet talked about is toothbrushes! Every one of us uses a toothbrush at least once in our daily routine (you should in fact be using it twice…but that can be discussed another time ;)).

Dentists recommend that we each replace our toothbrush every three months; for that reason we cannot class them as re-usable (if we did as we were told we would all go through 4 toothbrushes every year); the term re-usable can only really be reserved for items that survive long term.

Toothbrushes are made from a combination of plastic (created from crude oil!), rubber (the hand piece), and nylon (the bristles); not to mention they are sold in packaging that is largely made out of plastic. None of these materials is biodegradable, therefore, every toothbrush we dispose of ends up in landfill.

In fact, every toothbrush you have ever disposed of still exists – be it in landfill or floating in the ocean – plastic does not go away.

The Biodegradable Packaging – when you receive your toothbrush it will arrive in completely compostable packaging – the lesser of all evils. When mine arrived there was zero plastic packaging in sight.

The Charcoal Toothbrush are open about their use of nylon in the bristles – this is a difficult issue to overcome and I am yet to find a company who has solved it. However, the elimination of plastic in the handle SIGNIFICANTLY reduces their (and our) environmental footprint.

My Almond Milk Recipe

So, as you can see above, today I enjoyed my regular morning coffee with almond milk, happy in the knowledge that my charcoal toothbrush will do an amazing job at keeping my teeth nice and white.

My recipe below makes approximately 1 litre of milk.

Daniel and I eliminated dairy milk not only for health reasons, but also for environmental reasons. I have decided to reduce my environmental footprint further by making my own.

Guys…it is so so simple!

Ingredients/equipment

400g almonds

8 cups of water

Muslin cloth

Large bowl

Blender.

Recipe

Simply soak the almonds in 8 cups of water for 8-12 hours (or overnight).

Drain and rinse the almonds (they should feel slightly squishy to pinch).

Add the almonds and 8 more cups of water to a blender, and blend.

Place the muslin cloth over a bowl and secure, then pour the pulp on top.

Wrap the cloth around the pulp and squeeze the milk through the cloth into the bowl.

EASY PEASY!

You can do the same with whatever nut you prefer 🙂  Put the remaining pulp onto a baking tray and in the oven until it is completely dry.  Then, voila!  You have almond flour.

  1. Awesome! My husband and I are both in need of new toothbrushes, but all of that plastic has been a deterrent for us, and he was just talking about trying to make his own almond milk the other day. I’ll have to pass the recipe along! Thanks!
